Campaign of the Month: January 2015
Skies of Glass
Spirit Silver is a very soft, silver metal that constantly weeps a faint amount of pale mist. The metal comes from Ikari most commonly and is formed from kami passing through a normal vein of silver over the course of many, many years, making it incredibly rare. Spirit Silver is highly valued by Crafters because of its almost unparalleled ability to absorb magic,. The metal makes weak armor and weapons but both can be incredibly useful in different situations. Spirit Silver has 10 hit points per inch of thickness and hardness 5. Weapons and armor normally made of steel that are made of spirit silver have two-thirds fewer hit points than normal, and weighs half as much.
Spirit Silver weapons overcome DR/Silver and overcomes the DR, DA, and Regeneration of many spiritual creatures, such as kami and oni. Many kami and oni additionally have elevated spell resistance against spells cast by a spell caster who doesn’t wield a spirit silver weapon. All weapons made of Spirit Silver are treated as if they have the Ghost Touch enchantment. Additionally, any touch or ranged touch spell channeled and cast through a Spirit Silver weapon (such as the the arcane channeling class feature, a spell storing enchantment, a channeling enchantment, etc) deals 2 additional points of damage (if it deals damage; as-per a Chasuble of Power) and gains the benefits of the Ectoplasmic Spell metamagic. However, on a successful attack with a Spirit Silver weapon, the wielder takes a –2 penalty on the damage roll (with the usual minimum of 1 point of damage). Spirit Silver weapons cost an additional 18,000 gp.
Most spirit silver armors are one category lighter than normal for purposes of movement and other limitations. Heavy armors are treated as medium, and medium armors are treated as light, but light armors are still treated as light. This decrease does not apply to proficiency in wearing the armor. A character wearing spirit silver full plate must be proficient in wearing heavy armor to avoid adding the armor’s check penalty to all his attack rolls and skill checks that involve moving. Spell failure chances for armors and shields made from spirit silver are decreased by 10%, maximum Dexterity bonuses are increased by 2, and armor check penalties are decreased by 3 (to a minimum of 0). Spirit Silver armor is treated as if it has the Ghost Touch enchantment. Light armor, buckler-style shields, and light-style shields cost an additional 17,000 gp. Medium armor and heavy-style shields cost an additional 24,000 gp. Heavy armor and tower-style shields costs an additional 30,000 gp.
Weapons, armor, and shields made of spirit silver are always considered to be masterwork.
Spirit Silver is an inherently highly magical metal, and thus Crafters attempting to transmute it require 20% of the desired value in ectoplasm or similar spiritual remains (so a Crafter attempting to turn regular iron into 10,000 gp worth of Spirit Silver would need 2,000 gp worth of ectoplasm) and the material must be exposed to a kami for the entirety of the transmutation (most often requiring the assistance of a Shaman or an intelligent kami). Only the creature components are consumed in the transmutation, the kami is unharmed.
