Blood is a rich source of magical energy. By sacrificing the life of a creature, the blood mage may draw power from its spilled blood. The power drawn depends on the way in which the sacrifice is performed. This spell is cast at the same time the sacrifice is performed.

  • Quick Sacrifice: A quick sacrifice requires the caster perform a coup de grace and successfully kill their target. This coup de grace is always unusually bloody. A sacrifice made in this fashion grants the caster bonus artificial caster levels on the next spell they cast by the end of their next round. The number of bonus artificial caster levels granted is equal to 1 plus 1 per 4 hit dice the target possessed (rounded down) if the sacrifice was sentient. A non-sentient sacrifice grants half as many bonus artificial caster levels (minimum 1).
  • Slow Sacrifice: A slow sacrifice requires the caster slowly bleed their target for 1 minute before performing a special coup de grace and successfully kill their target. This coup de grace is made at a +2 difficulty and is always extremely bloody. A sacrifice made in this fashion grants the caster bonus artificial caster levels on the next spell they cast by the end of their next round. The number of bonus artificial caster levels granted is equal to 1 plus 1 per 2 hit dice the target possessed (rounded down) if the sacrifice was sentient. A non-sentient sacrifice grants half as many bonus artificial caster levels (minimum 1).

The blood mage may choose to gift the drawn power of the sacrifice to another with a touch, but the recipient gains 1 less bonus artificial caster level than the blood mage himself would have gained.

If the blood mage fails his Knowledge (blood magic) roll to cast this spell, the target is still subject to the coup de grace, but no power is absorbed from the creature’s death

Note that creatures without blood and/or without souls can never be used in a blood sacrifice. This includes most undead, plants, constructs, oozes, elementals, and all conjurations, and may at the GM’s discretion include other creatures which seem unlikely to have blood and/or souls.

Special: This spell is always learned as an imbued spell when a character gains 1 rank in Knowledge (Blood Magic) – once learned, it cannot be forgotten nor can ranks in Knowledge (Blood Magic) be removed while it is known.
