This spell wreathes you in elemental energy, granting you some protection against that element and damage creatures that attack you in melee. If cast using Red mana, this spell can grant wrap you in fire (warm shield). If cast using Blue mana, this spell can wrap you in cold energies (chill shield).
Any creature striking you with its body or a hand-held weapon deals normal damage, but at the same time the attacker takes 1d6 points of damage plus 1 point per caster level (maximum +15). This damage is of the same type as the element chosen when elemental shield was cast. If the attacker has spell resistance, it applies to this effect. Creatures wielding melee weapons with reach are not subject to this damage if they attack you.
When casting this spell, you appear to wrap yourself in a thin and wispy veil of the energy, increasing the light level within 10 feet by one step, up to normal light. The special powers of each version are as follows.
Warm Shield (Fire): The energies are warm to the touch and look like soft flames. You take only half damage from cold-based attacks. If such an attack allows a Reflex save for half damage, you take no damage on a successful saving throw.
Chill Shield (Cold): The energies are cool to the touch and look like chill winds and snow. You take only half damage from fire-based attacks. If such an attack allows a Reflex save for half damage, you take no damage on a successful saving throw.
The descriptor of this spell is the same as the energy type you chose when you cast it. A character cannot have both Grounding Shield and Fire Shield active at the same time.
